11 Amazing List Building Plugins to Grow Your Email List For Free

List Building Tools - WP

We both know that building an email list is important for online success, whether you’re a small business owner, a blogger, or an affiliate marketer.

It’s personal. It’s private. It’s what’ll set you up for success even if you lose all your organic search traffic.

So how do you grow your email list to a level where automation is possible?

It takes a lot of work. But there’s one essential tool…

…and that’s the optin form.

Whether it’s a popup, a sticky widget in your sidebar, a top bar, or an optin for that’s embedded in your content, it’s how people sign up for your list.

So it’s only right that a tool like this costs money, right?

Yeah, but, there are some list building tools available for us that are 100% free.

And that’s what we’re going to talk about today…

11 List Building Plugins Free For WordPress Users

I spent more than 24 hours all together testing a bunch of free optin form plugins.

And the ones I’m about to list below are the ones that I think are going to get your subscribers.

So let’s get started!

Note: This list is in alphabetical order.

Email Popup by Optin Cat

WP Optin Cat

This is an opt-in plugin created by the guys at Fatcat Apps. And this popup form is only a part of their main list building tool, Optin Cat.

This isn’t one of your “most popular” opt-in plugins, you know.  I mean, it could. It’s about as good as most of the free popup form plugins on this list.

It’s only got about 200 active users right now.

But it’s definitely a popup plugin I’d use on one of my sites.

  • Integrates with all the major email services and autoresponders.
  • Supports unlimited colors.
  • Ability to add CSS.
  • Easy to customize and use.
  • 2 popup form templates.

WP Icegram

Icegram is one of the most popular list building tools on this list.

The plugin offers 4 types of tools:

  • the popup – which pops up right in the middle of your page;
  • the header / footer bar – which sticks on the roof or floor of your page;
  • the toast notification – which is a little box that hovers over anywhere you want on your page;
  • and the messenger – which is exactly like Facebook’s messenger box that sticks to the lower corners of your page.

And they all could be used in 2 ways…

You can use them to get visitors to an optin page OR you can use them to get visitors to sign up to your list without leaving the page they’re on (the messenger doesn’t support the optin form).

  • Supports popups, header / footer bars, toast notifications, and messengers.
  • Supports lazy loading for better speed performance.
  • Powerful targeting rules.
  • All-in-one fully integrated WordPress plugin.
  • Compatible with autoresponders, and other plugins and themes.
  • Unique headline generator for ideas.
  • No forceful display of Icegram branding in your messages.
  • A lot of free useful add-ons.

Magic Action Box

WP Magic Action Box

This is a great plugin. I’ve never heard about this one until I found it in the WordPress plugins page when I was searching for plugins to feature on this list.

Highly recommended for people who hate popup forms (this plugin doesn’t support them).

Anyway, with Magic Action Box  you’d basically be building an optin box/form from scratch. There is no template or anything like most plugins have. There’s just a box.

But this box is extremely easy to customize. The plugin pretty much does it for you. All you’d have to do is choose whatever you want your box to look like.

  • Supports in-content optin forms, sidebar and header forms/boxes (no popups).
  • Easy to customize and use.
  • Make your own subscribe buttons and box styles.
  • Integrates with any email list service.

WP Mailmunch

Mailmunch is probably one of the best free list building plugins available right now.

It’s easy, it offers pretty much every popup you need, and it is 100% mobile friendly.

  • Supports the popup, in-content, sidebar, top bar, and slide-in scroll box optin forms.
  • Supports A/B testing.
  • Supports the exit intent to capture bouncers.
  • 2 optin form themes/templates offered in the free version.
  • Fully mobile responsive.
  • Advanced tracking (analytics).
  • Advanced targeting.
  • Integrates with all email services.

Optin Forms by Codeleon

WP Optin Forms

This is undoubtedly one of the best optin form plugins ever. And I’m not only talking about freebies.

Optin Forms isn’t a popup form, a top bar, a scroll box, or a sidebar widget. It’s an optin form that’s embedded within your content.

And it’s super customizable so that you can make it fit with your design.

  • Integrates with 6 email services including Mailchimp, Aweber, GetResponse, and Mad Mimi.
  • 5 form templates/designs.
  • Unlimited colors.
  • About 100 fonts.
  • Forms are easy to customize.
  • Place anywhere within your blog posts and pages.

Plugmatter Featured Box Lite

WP Plugmatter Feature Box Lite

Great plugin!

Have you ever seen that big email optin box right below the header and over the blog posts and sidebar on a website?

feature box example

Yeah, that’s the one.

This would go great with one of the plugins on this list that supports all the other optin forms.

  • 100% responsive for mobile users.
  • Fully customizable and it’s easy.
  • Integrates with more than 10 email services.

PopUp by Supsystic

WP Popup by Supsystic

Supsystic’s popup optin plugin is one that I wasn’t expecting to be so good.

The best part of the plugin is that it offers more than 20 optin form templates, including a couple that supports videos.

  • More than 20 templates/designs.
  • Supports video forms.
  • Advanced targeting options.
  • Integrates with 4 email services (Mailchimp, Aweber, Mailpoet, and WordPress).
  • Unlimited colors.
  • Tons of customizing options.
  • Provides detailed stats.
  • CSS/HTML editor for devolopers.

WP PopupAlly

Ambitionally is creators of this badass multi-optin form plugin.

Yes. It supports more than the lightbox popup.

  • Integrates with any email services that does HTML.
  • Supports 2 forms – the popup and the embedded (in-content) form.
  • Supports 2 popup forms at once.
  • Supports the embedded sign up form (in-content).
  • Supports the exit intent and time triggered popup.
  • Supports the option to exclude certain pages.
  • Option to send ew subscribers to a Thank You page.
  • Easy to customize and use.

SumoMe WP

Without a doubt, SumoMe is the best free email marketing plugin. It’s got 4 separate list building tools:

  • List Builder – a popup form
  • Welcome Mat – a huge form that covers the whole screen
  • Scroll Box – a slide-in box that pops up in the lower corners
  • SmartBar – a sticky header/top bar

It doesn’t work like any of the other plugins on this list.

How it works is it operates through an ultimate dashboard where you’ll be able to access it anywhere on your site without leaving the page.

And you’ll have to install apps. For instance, the List Builder.

It’s also got apps for social sharing, which is a plus.

  • Includes 4 list building tools – List Builder (popover), Welcome Mat (on top of your page), SmartBar (header/top bar), and Scroll Box (slide in).
  • Integrates with nearly every email solution.
  • Tons of customizable options.
  • Multiple templates and designs.
  • Advanced targeting and trigger options.
  • Plugin tracks all stats.
  • And much more…

Note: This is your best option for free list building tools.

WP Conversion Boxes

WP Conversion Boxes

This plugin creates optin forms and call-to-action boxes.

Very useful.

  • Several optin  form templates.
  • Easy to customize using the visual editor (it’s exactly like the WordPress theme editor/previewer).
  • Advanced popup triggering (timed, scrolled, and exit intent).
  • Tracks your forms’ impressions, conversions, and conversion rate.

WP Subscribe

WP Subscribe MTS

WP Subscribe is the lite version of WP Subscribe Pro by the guys at MyThemeShop.

But that doesn’t mean that this version is useless. In fact, it’s anything but.

  • Integrates with Mailchimp, Aweber, and Feedburner.
  • Sidebar widget optin form.
  • Easy to customize and use.
  • Supports the double optin.

Free list building plugins and optin forms are a good way to get started in email marketing.

And by using one or more from the list above, you’ll have a real shot at capturing some of your visitors’ email addresses.

When you’re ready I’d recommend investing in a premium list building plugin like ThriveLeads (the one I use on this site). That way you’ll have more options, more optin forms, and ultimately more subscribers.
