For Affiliates: How to Make Money in Affiliate Marketing
Have you been thinking about starting an affiliate marketing business? Or maybe you are just looking for a way to make money online and have no real idea on how to go about it. Well, whatever reason you’re on the internet right now, it’s gotta have something to do with money, right?
In this article, I will be talking about how to make money in affiliate marketing. I will be going through how it works, the kinda stuff you would be doing, how to start, what kinda stuff you will need, and more.
Basically just the whole shabang. However, this will not be a tutorial kinda thing. This will be more of an overview of the affiliate marketing process (the basics). If you are looking for something more training-like, then you are gonna wanna check out my guide to affiliate marketing (beginner-friendly).
If you really have no idea of what affiliate marketing is, in a few words, it is when a someone promotes (and sells) a merchant’s (a business/company) products and/or services and in return receive a percentage (commission).
If you would like to read more info on what it is, then I suggest you check out a post I wrote on that topic.
Before we get started here I just wanna say a couple things. 1) This is NOT a get rich quick type of mumbo jumbo. It will take time. How much time? That is all up to you. 2) You will need to have your own website/blog. Almost every single person who is making money online has their own site.
Choosing a Niche[alert-note]A niche (or niche market) is basically what you and your site is about and targeting a specific type of people or market. (your topic).[/alert-note]
So, the first thing you would have to do is to figure out what you’re site going to be about. Many affiliate marketers out there will say to go with your passion, while others will say go for the most profitable niche (topic).
I’m not saying they’re wrong, I would rather go with a little of both – go with something you know about (at least know some about), plus the profitable part.
To do this you will need to do one thing: RESEARCH. And to research you will need tools to help speed it up and all. So, I will only recommend tools that are free.
Here’s what you will need:
- A keyword research tool – Jaaxy and the Google Planner are 2 free ones,
- Open Site Explorer – Moz.com, Majestic.com, and Ahrefs.com have their own.
Now you will need to use your head and think of a bunch of niche ideas. Now, 1 by 1, you can pop em into the keyword tool of your choice and check out which ones have:
- At least an average of 1,500 monthly searches,
- have related keywords (they’re for writing articles)
After you got your main ideas you would then go to Google and search them 1 by 1 and take the pages (URL’s) from the first page results and write them down.
For example, I search “foam mattress reviews” in Google and grab the URL address of all the first 10 pages (of the first page of Google). Here’s the #1 result: sleeplikethedead.com/mattressreview-memory-foam.html
Next, I will copy the URL and pop it into an Open Site Explorer. I use Moz.com.
Here’s how it would look:
Do this with ALL of Google’s top 10. If you get at least 2 or 3 pages that have a Page Authority less than 30, then you will have a chance at ranking in Google.
Now do this with ALL of the ideas you came up with.
After you got all your research done you should have a good idea of what niche to go with.
For me, I would choose the one with good numbers. For example:
- The one with the most monthly searches +
- has 3 or more pages with a PA of 30 or less +
- a bunch of other keywords I can write about +
- a product that I can promote
And the last thing you should ask yourself before choosing is, “do I know about it?” If you have no clue what it is then you WILL have a VERY HARD time trying to write stuff and building your site around it.
If you at least know a little about it, then that should be alright. You can always research about it.
Building Your Website/Blog
Now that you’ve chosen your niche, it is time to build your website. But, before you actually build it, you must first choose a domain name. A domain name is your unique address (yourdomainname.com).
Here are a few tips on choosing your domain name:
- make it BRANDABLE
- you can also make it keyword-rich (i.e “howtomakemoneyonline.com”
- try to get a .com (.net, .org are 2 other options)
- make it easy to read, easy to type, easy to remember
- don’t make it too long
After you have figured out what domain name you are going with, you can now build your website.
There are several places where you can purchase domains, I get mine at Namecheap for about $10 a year. You will also need hosting, you can get that there too. Personally, I use Wealthy Affiliate for hosting services, which happens to be the place where I’ve learned everything I know about everything I know. Haha.
Getting Traffic to Your Website/Blog (Attracting Visitors)
After you have finished up building and setting up your brand new website/blog, you will need some people to visit. But, before you have your audience come to your site you will need something for them to read.
So what are you gonna do? CREATE CONTENT.
Write articles (posts and pages) for your people to read. Write reviews of products in your niche so you can recommend or not recommend them to your people.
What ever you write about, just make sure that it is relevant (about your main topic), helpful, and of high quality. If you do this, Google will start taking notice and rank your site (and pages) in the SERPS (Google’s results pages).
Other ways to drive traffic to your site are:
- Social Networks (Facebook, Twitter, Google+, etc.)
- Forums related to your niche
- Paid traffic
- and more.
Making Money in Affiliate Marketing!
So, now you have a decent amount of visitors coming to your site everyday. What now?
You join affiliate programs and look for a nice product you can recommend to your peeps. How will I do that?
First, you are gonna have to think of something, a product or a service, that your visitors really want or need. What are they really looking for?
Affiliate programs are not hard to find. You can simply do a quick search at Google: “your niche” + affiliate programs or “your product/service” + affiliate programs. For example, if my niche was iPhone cases I would search: iPhone cases + affiliate programs, right?
Some popular affiliate programs are:
- CJ Affiliate (formerly Commission Junction)
- Clickbank – mostly digital products
- Amazon Associates
